Yoga Practice Tips

Just some reminders of how to honor your practice and your neighbors.

Arrive Early.  Getting to class about 10 minutes early can help you become centered and grounded.  If you arrive late to class, please sit quietly in meditation in the lobby. Once the class has completed opening meditation you may quietly join the class for asana.

Please turn off phones and pagers.  Please turn them completely off as they can still be heard when in vibration mode.

Please remain quiet in the yoga room.  Leaving socializing and business behind will enhance your yogic experience.

Leaving and reentering class should only be done for restroom emergencies.  If you know you must leave class early let the teacher know before class and position yourself near the exit.

Arrive free of strong scents.  This includes scented lotions, perfumes, Flex-all, and Ben-gay.

Please do not smoke prior to attending a yoga class.  In addition to certain scents, some yogis are allergic to cigarette smoke.

It is suggested that you do not practice inversions if you are menstruating.  Practicing inversions during the heaviest days of your menstrual cycle can inhibit the natural process.

Refrain from eating for about 2-3 hours before class.  Practicing yoga on a full stomach will result in cramps, nausea, or vomiting.

Let the teacher know about injuries/conditions.  If you have an injury or condition that may affect your practice let the teacher know so proper adjustments can be made.

Let the teacher know if you are pregnant.  It is usually safe to practice during pregnancy; however, modifications to the poses will need to be made.

Bring a towel and purchase your own mat.  If you perspire heavily we highly recommend that you purchase your own mat.

Please step around others yoga mats.  This is considered their special space rather than just a part of the floor.

Honor your neighbor.  All of your actions during class affect your classmates, so always be thoughtful and aware.
Please remember that the practice of yoga is a discipline and the benefits that you receive are limitless and far more than just physical. We will gently enforce these rules, so we ask for your cooperation and that you act as an example to your fellow students.  We appreciate your commitment, your participation and all of your effort!
